Photographing Newborns – to pose or not to pose? It’s a No from us
Like everything we do, our style is n-a-t-u-r-a-l. We love babies as they are, cuddling with you where they feel most comfortable. Awake or asleep. Feeding or crying. And safe. This is known as baby-led posing, rather than traditional posing into odd shapes and setups (you can easily find examples with a quick Google or Insta hashtag search). We also take photos in the comfort of your own home, and only need the natural daylight from a window to work. No studio visit or awkward lighting setups required.
Babies are flexible but seeing photos of a baby folded up and almost wrapped into a ball makes us upset, as does balancing their head in their hands like an adult (thankfully photoshopped, but still). So it’s a no from us when it comes to tight swaddling, props – no dressing as a cabbage or curled into a flower pot - unnatural propping up and posing. We prefer cuddles, lying down, sleeping and feeding. We can get gorgeous detail shots of baby’s feet, hands, and face while they are comfortable and feel secure with you or on a blanket.
Those colourful, or tonal photos often take hours to do in a studio setting, and a whole lot more time photoshopping to put several images together to get the final, usually unnatural, pose. This isn’t much fun for a newborn baby, or their parents, and a pretty stressful way to get some photos. Our number one priority is your baby’s safety and comfort and making sure you feel comfortable too.
Babies are the best posers – just the way they move, curl up and stretch out is gorgeous, not to mention their facial expressions. They are naturally photogenic (it makes editing your pics a hard job) and because we don’t need to wait for them to ‘perform’ or pose, our sessions can be quick. Saying that, we allocate enough time for feeding, changing, settling, getting siblings involved and everything else that might be required, so there’s no rush.
