Capturing moments now for memories in the future
I wanted to have professional photos done because I loved looking at the family photo albums my Mum had. My sister and I would sit down and look at them together, and I have such nice memories of doing that. We wanted to get professional photos to look back at, and for our baby Patrick too. Looking back on my own photos brings back stories and encourages story time, and kids love hearing about when they were little.
I’m hoping to have photos done every year or two and start a tradition. You take photos on your phone but never print them out or do anything with them, but professional photos are so special, so I’m going to print and hang some, and make an album.
Before the shoot, we were sleep deprived and a bit nervous but once we planned ahead a bit about what to wear etc, it was all good and it wasn’t stressful at all. We read the reassuring and helpful articles on Elena’s website, and on the day, it was great. She worked around things, our newborn baby was fine and it was far from stressful – as a first-time mum, I really didn’t know what to expect from our three week old baby.
The photos turned out so well, Patrick slept on and off and we got photos of him sleeping - babies always look so lovely when they’re sleeping, so they are really special. I wanted something natural and ‘lifestyle’ looking, not so posed in a basket, something more realistic in your own home or outdoors, and our photos are what I was hoping for.
I was surprised, you really don’t need much to get a good photo. You don’t need the nursery looking perfect and beautiful – you really only need a little corner. We moved around the house a bit, but you don’t need lots of props to get a good photo – the corner of a couch, a bit of a blanket and that’s it.
The photos really captured our baby, they weren’t posed, and my favourite shots are of Patrick and his dad – they are really special. My husband really liked the photos – like ‘look what we made’. Watching my husband getting photos taken together with Patrick was really lovely.
My advice to other families is – do it! It might feel like a bit of a hassle getting ready, but it only takes a few hours – you might think it’s a slight inconvenience to get dressed up a bit, but then you’ve got those great memories. It was actually nice to put on a bit of makeup and do my hair and get dressed after weeks of living in jammies! You don’t really have to do much, Elena just turns up!
